Using pro backing tracks on stage is an experience that is very exciting for most cover bands. The first time they’re used band members often comment about how ‘huge’ they now sound. It can take a little bit of work to be able to use them properly but once you start you will never turn back to doing a show without them.
I was first introduced to using Van Halen Backing Tracks a few years ago when I joined a Van Tribute that was doing much of the Sammy Hagar era of VH. I was amazed at the thought of being able to do any of their songs using the keyboard backing tracks because naturally, the songs sounded amazing and of course the bottom line is always how the audience responds to it. Well Sammy era VH nuts LOVED it and we were very well received as a result.
For bands that only require a keyboard or string part every once in a while, backing tracks are the perfect answer. It’s the perfect way to add that just right part to any song without having to have a full time keyboard player or horn line at your disposal. This way you can cover songs more accurately, and your audience will think that you sound so much better than the band they heard last week. They'll think you sound amazing, and they'll tell you that too!

There has been some debate as to whether or not performing with backing tracks is an honest way to present songs to your audience. Purists say that it’s cheating, that you have a perfect invisible member on stage that never makes mistakes and that it removes the spontaneity from the performance. Others, myself included, think that it gives your audience a more complete version of any song, and while they may not be able to put their finger on why your band is better, they just know that you are, and they will remember you more as a result. But, you have to use top quality
professional instrumental backing to be able to pull it off.

Once you know how to control live backing tracks and are used to using them it makes things better by giving
you a click track. This helps to ensure that you are not speeding up and slowing
down onstage and that the music you’re playing is being performed at the right
speed and is not too quick which can often be the case when bands/musicians
perform live. It can take some getting used to though so be sure to read about
controlling backing tracks for some help on how to use them.
